This is Frida Kahlo’s painting “The Broken Column”. It was painted after her spinal surgery which was performed to correct injuries caused by a severe traffic accident. In this painting she represents her spine as a shattered column, held together by the back brace she had to wear. Nails embedded in her skin represent where she’s in pain. This painting shows how debilitating and all encompassing Kahlo’s pain was and the major affect it had on her life.

I am currently working on making a ribcage out of clay. I made each vertebrae, hollowed them out, then score and slipped them together. After adding the ribs, I rolled a slab on the thinnest setting of the slab roller and draped it over the rest of the piece to make skin. I wanted it to flow naturally over the piece, and cut in a few holes to make it looked ragged. I am working on making bugs from sculpee to add to the inside of the rib cage, I may also add eyes and teeth.
Hunger & Appetite has now been bisque fired with a layer of black underglaze over most of the piece. After bisque firing, I painted on eyes with white overglaze. On one side of the piece, I have carved "A TWO HEADED MONSTER" and on the other side I carved "EATS TWICE AS MUCH". I then filled the words in with black underglaze to make sure they are still readable. I will be giving this piece a glaze fire and then touching up as needed.
I added red underglaze and white overglaze to the teeth of my Wolf Mouth sculpture. This draws the eye to them, as they are shinier than the rest of the piece. For now I am not putting clear glaze over the rest of the piece, but may change my mind later. For now, I am deciding that this piece is done.
